It was conceived and started by David Gregori in 1994 he understood at an early stage the potential the Internet had for marketing products and services. David began building web sites and including them within the portal as a better way for the public to find the information they needed to plan their vacations. The concept of portals was relatively new at the time and many of the assumptions David made at that time were visionary. One of the reasons that PEIsland is now so successful is due to these early steps he made in designing the site model. Over the years it has proven itself to be very effective and the latest statistics show that approximately 400,000 unique visitors are on the site during a year or about 40 of the 1,000,000 visitors to the Province each year. David was joined after a few years of operation by Pat Chan who also contributed in a significant way to further developing the portal and refining its business case. In 1999, Donald McKearney, who was a tourist operator himself, bought the portal from David and Pat and operated it until it was sold in 2003.
