Nostalgia, anyone? Lets go back to the mid1920s, to a 3rd floor loft in a factory building in New York City overlooking 14th St. between 5th and 6th Avenue. This was the home of Premier Artificial Flowers Inc., manufacturer and wholesaler, of artificial flowers, leaves, ferns, etc. made from hotpressed dyed cloth and handwound wire stems. At that time we didnt have the plastics of today, in fact the only thing close to what could be called a plastic was a highly flammable material going by the name Celluloid, which was the primary medium for the 35mm movie film of the era, and Bakelite. We hadnt really created the term injection molding for another decade I was curious little boy roaming around the machines in my fathers factory, and learning that a hand operated screwpress produced over 4 tons of pressure on the forming dies used to make bright red poppypetals for the poppys the girls who worked there assembled for the American Legion Veterans to sell on Armistice Day. My father, George G. Singer, president of the company, was primarily a innovative salesman, and sold his line of merchandise to almost all the major Department Stores nationwide. As Christmas approached he noticed the slowdown in the floral departments of these stores. This stimulated him into designing the first line of green artificial Christmas trees, to be sold in the floral departments, that would now be called TrimATree shops. A few years later after being very successful with these green Visca Trees, he designed and manufactured, against warnings of being to radical, white Visca Trees Visca: a type of broadflat fibre imported from Switzerland in skeins. Through dealing with the Swiss, he started to use small musicboxes in a new line of wooden cabins, treepots, and churches that were sprayed with a then new white waterbased vinyllatex paint, and were hand flocked with finely chopped mica imported from India. During the next two years he became the largest importer of small Swiss music boxes. The company was now Premier Decorations Inc., with a new enlarged factory in Queens, New York. As you can see, although Christmas Holiday traditions are old, there was room for innovation But Dad was far from through. Plastics had now found a way into everyday life, so when he saw some crystalclear molded multifaceted diamond replicas his bell started ringing again. The year was 1939. The curious little boy was now a curious young man trying to improve on each operation in the factory. When my Dad handed me some samples of these brilliant clear polystyrene jewels and said to me See what we can do with something like these, ? I can honestly say this was probably the defining point in my life. The road I followed since that day has been built of plastic, starting with mold designs jeweled diamondlike snowflakes, then injection molding one of the first automatic Van Dorn 2 oz. machines , vacuum forming the first large two station machines for outdoor Christmas vinyl displays , heatsealing the only line of inflatable Christmas decorations , blowmolding the first continuous two station machine making gallon water bottles, etc.,and extrusion and a number of plastics related patents. My companies were Premier Plastic Molding Inc., Your Garden Inc., NuSeal Inc., and interests in Castle Products Inc., and Advance Molding Inc. Now, after having retired twice, Ive gotten a thirdwind, and with my daughter Vivian, and granddaughter Vanessa, we will build a line with your help of course of new , safe, and reasonably priced, Christmas Decorations. Also, revive some of the oldies I made in the 1940s.
